Begun in 2013, the three-year, three-phase renovation project of the Illustration Studies Building (ISB) has converted an 1859 dye warehouse, long home to one of RISD’s most populous departments, into a state of the art studio and classroom building. An addition containing a code compliant fire stair, elevator, and bathrooms as well as lounge space was constructed in 2013 and connected to the ISB. In the summer of 2014 mechanical systems were replaced and a redundant fire stair and bathrooms were removed in preparation for a final full building renovation and reorganization which took place in the summer of 2015. At the end of the project, the 45,365 GSF ISB has been fully renovated to meet fire, safety and accessibility codes, and includes new studios, offices, homespace, classrooms and a gallery.
